Fußnoten:Abstract: Written at the time of Charles of Anjou's rise to power in Provence in the mid-thirteenth century, Marseilles' municipal statutes were routinely mentioned in the city council's minutes as well as in labour contracts and litigations. These documents clearly attest to the consensual importance of the civic legislation in socio-economic activities, including labour relations. Despite a certain social appropriation of the municipal law by the well-off, in the context of the labour supply crisis worsening in the later fourteenth century, the labourers themselves evoked the protective statutes, even though they were originally designed by the urban elite and masters-artisans to support a hierarchical culture of production.
