| Fußnoten: | Abstract: Between 1880 and 1914, in Lyon, a metropolis of the industrial age, the steam horse locomotive was only just beginning to replace the omnipresent horse, a veritable "living machine", as a source of power. The number of horses in the city grew despite the electrification of the tramways. The resilience of the urban horse stemmed from the very efficient management of the metropolitan cavalry. Documents from the tax authorities (the tax on horses and carriages) and from military sources (the law of 3 July 1877 on requisitions), which have seldom been cited and never before analysed together, allow us to see how draught horses were outsourced from households and then from companies. Horse-drawn transport offered a great deal of management flexibility: many kinds of hiring were possible, involving horses, vehicles or both. This explains why horse-drawn carriages remained a central part of Lyon until the 1930s. |
