Fußnoten:Abstract: The purpose of the chapter is to define the pace of population ageing in the towns and cities in the peripheral areas of Poland at the beginning of the 21st century. The authors also presented the relationship between the population growth and the migration balance, as well as evaluating the influence of these parameters on the contemporary population ageing processes. They also analysed the correlations between the population size, location of urban areas, population aging and population dynamics. In order to define the relationship between the natural population growth and the migration balance in the towns and cities included in the study, the authors based their research on Webb's method. The pace of population ageing was defined with the use of the ageing ratio (AR), based on the differences between the percentages of young and old people in the population. The analysis proved that the ageing processes in the towns and cities located in the peripheral areas of Eastern Poland are more intensive than those ongoing in urban centres in other parts of the country, mainly due to a considerable negative net migration rate regarding mostly women and young people.
