Fußnoten:La clemenza d'Augusto, performed in 1697 at the Teatro Tordinona in Rome, is one of the most documented and studied seventeenth-century Roman operas. Drawing on the idea of performance as relational space, this chapter contextualises La clemenza as part of the 1697 theatrical season in Rome and highlights sociopolitical tensions and cultural dynamics beyond the theatrical event to analyse the relationships between all parties involved. The contribution also traces the various operational strategies that were intentionally deployed in organizing the performance event, and, from that perspective, rereads the 'personalised' motivations of patronage as well as the opera's dramaturgical-musical dimension. From this rereading, a cross-section emerges of Rome's role as the 'great theatre of the world' and of the performative society that was a fundamental characteristic of the Roman performance model during this period
